Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Founders’ Pledge?

The Berkeley Founders’ Pledge is an opportunity for company founders, equity holders or investors to make a non-binding commitment to give back to Cal when they attain success. Alumni who make the Founders’ Pledge have full control over the timing, amount, and designation of their gift; support can be directed to any unit or program on campus, and does not need to be determined until the time the gift is made. Making the Pledge is an easy, rewarding way to join a cohort of successful Cal innovators who’ve publicly signaled their support of their alma mater from the earliest days of their business venture.

How does it work?

You complete the pledge form in the Are You Ready section above or contact us at Contact to request a hardcopy form. When the timing is right for you – for example, after your company’s IPO, acquisition, or steady revenue growth – you contact us to arrange a gift of cash or, in some circumstances, a gift of stock. We can connect you to a gift planning expert who can help your financial and tax advisors determine whether a gift of cash vs. stock is preferable for you.

Why would I want to do this?

When you make a commitment to UC Berkeley under the Founders’ Pledge program, you join an exclusive community of entrepreneurs and leaders who have a passion for Berkeley’s work, ideals, and mission. You have the satisfaction of making philanthropic goals an integral part of your business success. And you have access to the Founders’ Pledge network, a startup-savvy team of campus staff who can connect you to a broad spectrum of Berkeley resources.

Is there a minimum dollar amount for my contribution?

No. Every gift to Cal is deeply appreciated and enhances our ability to offer a world-class education and conduct world-changing research. Your gift should be personally significant, depending on your unique situation and goals for the impact you want to have at Berkeley.

Can I designate my pledge to any school, college, or program on campus?

Yes, you may direct your gift to any unit on campus. When you make your pledge, you can identify areas or topics of potential interest; we’ll help you explore your philanthropic goals over time. Your interests may change, of course, and you always have the option to designate a gift to any area(s) of campus. Berkeley Founders’ Pledge gifts could even help the university create entirely new programs.

What are the tax ramifications?

There are no tax ramifications associated with making the pledge; tax considerations come into play when you make a gift to Berkeley. We always recommend that donors consult with their own financial advisors to fully understand the tax implications for any gifts, given their specific circumstances. We can arrange a conversation with one of our in-house giving experts to provide additional information, if you wish.

Who has made the Founders' Pledge?

Founders’ Pledge members include entrepreneurs and leaders who have started a company or are early-stage employees who hold equity in their company, including several “unicorn” startups now valued at over $1 billion. The Founders’ Pledge group is a unique and special cohort of donors who think creatively to find solutions and leverage opportunities. This program provides the opportunity for you to be mindful and forward-thinking in your philanthropy toward Berkeley.
